Punjab Allows 16-Year-Olds to Obtain Motorcycle Licenses

The Punjab government has approved a policy to issue special motorcycle driving licenses to individuals aged 16 and above, enabling them to legally ride motorcycles across the province under defined conditions. This decision was recently sanctioned by the Punjab Cabinet and is anticipated to take effect following the publication of an official gazette notification.

After the cabinet’s approval, the Home Department forwarded the recommendations to the Law Department, which is now expected to release the notification soon. The new licensing framework permits 16-year-olds holding these special licenses to operate motorcycles and carry one passenger. However, they will be prohibited from driving commercial vehicles, including motorcycle rickshaws, Qingqi rickshaws, or any form of public transport.

Officials emphasized that applicants must comply with all existing legal requirements. This includes passing the prescribed driving tests and meeting eligibility criteria before being granted a motorcycle license.

The initiative aims to establish a formal legal structure for young motorcycle riders, promoting safer road use and adherence to traffic laws. Authorities believe that bringing eligible young riders into the regulated licensing system will help curb unlicensed underage motorcycle operation and encourage responsible driving habits among the youth.

This move is part of broader efforts by Punjab to improve road safety and regulate transportation practices within the province.
