Punjab Launches First Provincial General Insurance Company
Punjab has become the first province in Pakistan to establish a general insurance company, marking a significant development in the country’s public sector financial services. The Punjab General Insurance Company will manage all non-life insurance requirements for government institutions under the supervision of the provincial Finance Department.
The establishment of this company follows a formal meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif in Lahore. A special committee has been formed to oversee its setup, and a proposal seeking formal approval has been forwarded to the provincial cabinet for review and final authorization.
The company’s board will be composed of key government officials, including the Chairman of the Planning and Development Department, the Secretary of Finance, and the President of Punjab Bank. This initiative aims to provide more structured and reliable insurance services within the public sector.
In addition to the general insurance company, Punjab has also fast-tracked the registration of the Punjab Life Insurance Company, which recently secured its license from the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan. The life insurance company plans to offer specialized insurance products tailored to cover citizens across various economic and social groups in the province.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has emphasized the importance of incorporating the private sector into these insurance schemes to broaden participation and enhance coverage. She commended the expedited approval processes for both companies as indicators of improved administrative efficiency in Punjab.
Highlighting Punjab’s role as a reform leader in Pakistan, the Chief Minister reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to innovation in public policy. She announced plans to introduce a comprehensive health insurance policy that will allow citizens to receive medical treatment at any facility of their choice.
Maryam Nawaz also pointed out the rapid growth of the global insurance industry and stressed the need for Punjab’s insurance policies to align with international standards and contemporary practices. This progressive approach is expected to boost the insurance sector’s development within the province and serve as a model for other regions.
The launch of the Punjab General Insurance Company and the swift establishment of the Punjab Life Insurance Company represent important steps toward strengthening financial security and insurance accessibility for both government entities and residents in Punjab.
