Threads Launches Messaging on Web Platform

Meta-owned social network Threads has introduced messaging capabilities on its web platform, enabling users to engage in one-on-one and group chats directly from desktop browsers. The addition aligns Threads more closely with other social media competitors that already offer comprehensive web-based messaging, such as X and Bluesky.

Connor Hayes, head of Threads at Meta, shared that web messaging was the most requested feature from the user community after the company rolled out direct messages (DMs) in July 2025. “Our most engaged people spend time on web because they’re at their desks, tapped in, using Threads for longer sessions,” Hayes stated. “A conversation app needs to work wherever you are, and now it does.”

The new web experience features a dedicated “Messages” tab providing access to users’ DM inboxes, including a “Requests” section for incoming message requests. Additionally, users can search their messages and initiate new chats quickly, streamlining communication on desktop.

This launch was hinted at by Hayes in April, signaling the company’s commitment to expanding the platform’s functionality. Initially launched without native direct messaging at its debut in 2023, Threads has rapidly integrated messaging as a core feature. The platform has seen a 30% weekly increase in message sending since the beginning of 2026, averaging approximately 350 million DMs per week.

Threads continues to evolve to maintain competitiveness in the social media landscape. Recently, it launched a unique feature called Live Chats, which is currently available within the NBA Threads community during the playoffs. Live Chats allow real-time conversations among up to 150 active participants who can exchange messages, photos, videos, links, and emoji reactions. Beyond this participant limit, additional users can observe conversations, react to messages, and take part in polls in spectator mode.

With messaging on the web and Live Chats, Threads appears to be emphasizing real-time interaction and community engagement, extending the platform’s appeal beyond simple posts and replies. This strategic development highlights Meta’s push to make Threads a more versatile and engaging social networking service.
