Karachi Mayor Faces Criticism for Riding E-Bike Without Helmet
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has come under scrutiny after videos surfaced showing him riding an electric bike at the Sindh Assembly premises without wearing a helmet. This incident has attracted public attention amid the ongoing strict enforcement of helmet-related traffic laws in Karachi.
The city has recently intensified its efforts to enforce traffic regulations through the automated e-challan system. This AI-assisted platform, introduced in October last year, uses approximately 1,200 CCTV cameras installed across Karachi to monitor violations such as helmet non-compliance, signal breaches, and speeding. Under this system, riders caught without helmets can face fines up to Rs. 10,000.
Despite the ongoing crackdown, the mayor’s helmetless ride was caught on camera, leading to immediate criticism and renewed discussions about equal accountability in traffic law enforcement across the city. The incident also highlights concerns about adherence to traffic safety norms by public figures.
Addressing reporters after arriving at the assembly, Mayor Wahab remarked that riding a motorcycle is not difficult and nostalgically referred to his childhood experience of riding bicycles. He explained that he was on his way to attend an official meeting at the time. Additionally, the mayor acknowledged that although he holds a car driving license, he does not currently possess a motorcycle license. He stated his intention to obtain a helmet and apply for a motorcycle license promptly.
The controversy has sparked debate over the consistency of law enforcement in Karachi. Critics argue that while the government emphasizes fines and penalties through technology-driven solutions, fundamental challenges such as traffic management, infrastructure deficits, and road conditions remain unaddressed.
Since its launch, the automated e-challan system, formally called the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS), has been praised for introducing transparency and efficiency in penalizing traffic offenders. However, it has also attracted criticism for its implementation amid the city’s ongoing infrastructure shortcomings.
As Karachi continues to grapple with traffic enforcement, the mayor’s incident serves as a reminder of the need for public officials to model compliance with safety regulations. It also underscores the importance of consistent and impartial application of traffic laws to foster a culture of road safety in the metropolis.
