Solar Panel Prices Surge Ahead of Budget 2026-27 GST Hike

Solar panel prices in Karachi have experienced a significant increase ahead of the upcoming financial year budget for 2026-27. Market sources report a sharp rise ranging from Rs 7,000 to Rs 9,000 per solar panel, reflecting early adjustments by suppliers anticipating changes in taxation policy.
The cost of the 585-watt solar panel has surged from Rs 18,000 to Rs 27,000, while the 645-watt variant has climbed from Rs 22,000 to Rs 31,200. Similarly, the 720-watt solar panel’s price has escalated from Rs 25,000 to Rs 33,500, indicating a broad upward revision affecting all major wattage categories available in local markets.
Industry insiders have also cautioned that inverter prices may soon increase, compounding the financial burden on consumers looking to invest in solar energy solutions. This trend comes as a response to anticipated fiscal policy changes proposed in the federal budget for 2026-27.
Specifically, the budget proposal includes raising the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on solar panels from the current rate of 10% to 18%. Although the budget has yet to be formally presented or approved, traders and suppliers in Karachi have preemptively adjusted their prices to reflect the expected increase in tax liability.
This pre-budget price hike highlights the solar energy market’s sensitivity to fiscal measures and may impact the affordability and adoption rate of renewable energy solutions in Pakistan. Consumers and investors will need to monitor the budget’s final provisions closely as they could influence the renewable energy sector’s growth trajectory in the near term.
The developments underscore the challenges posed by taxation amendments on essential sectors like renewable energy, which are critical to Pakistan’s energy strategy and environmental goals. Stakeholders across the industry are expected to engage with policymakers in response to these proposed tax changes.
