Samsung to discontinue Samsung News app on Galaxy devices
Samsung has announced it will be shutting down the Samsung News application on Galaxy smartphones and tablets, marking another step in its strategy to prioritize Google services on its devices. The exact timeline for the closure will depend on the region, but users can expect the transition in the near future.
Reasons behind Samsung News app shutdown
For years, the Samsung News app served as the default news aggregator for Galaxy users, delivering personalized content from various publishers directly to home and lock screens. It was closely integrated with Samsung Free, the company’s broader content aggregation platform.
This move is part of Samsung’s broader effort to reduce overlap between its own apps and Google’s service offerings. A similar phase-out is planned for other Samsung apps such as Samsung Messages in the United States, which will transition to Google Messages by July 2026. Additional Samsung apps like Samsung Daily Plus on smart TVs, AR Doodle, and Quick Measure are also set to be discontinued.
Impact on Galaxy users and alternatives
Samsung is directing its Galaxy users toward Google News and Google Discover, both already present on most Galaxy device home screens. These alternatives will provide comparable personalized news feeds. Users may also explore other third-party news applications such as Flipboard, Inshorts, and SmartNews for their news consumption needs.
Importantly, Samsung has not communicated any measures for transferring user data such as bookmarked articles or subscriptions from Samsung News to Google’s platforms. Consequently, users should back up any important saved content before the app’s discontinuation.
Relevance for Pakistani Galaxy users
Samsung holds a strong position in Pakistan’s Android smartphone market, especially with its mid-range Galaxy A series, making this change significant for many local users. Samsung News has been a valuable source of both local and global news for Pakistani audiences. Google News and Discover, however, are fully functional in Pakistan and support local publishers, which should help facilitate a smooth transition.
Given the widespread use of Samsung devices in Pakistan, keeping informed about this transition and preparing to adopt Google’s news services will ensure continued access to personalized and up-to-date news content.
As Abdul Wasay, a technology analyst, summed up: “Samsung’s strategy to phase out overlapping apps in favor of Google services aims to streamline user experience and leverage well-established platforms.” This shift underscores the evolving collaboration and competition within the Android ecosystem, directly impacting millions of users worldwide, including Pakistan.
