Syed Azfar Ali Nasir Named SMPRA Chairman for Five Years
The federal government of Pakistan has appointed Barrister Syed Azfar Ali Nasir as the new chairman of the Social Media Protection and Regulatory Authority (SMPRA) for a five-year term. This decision was formalized through an official notification issued on October 30 under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Act, 2025.
Experienced Leadership for Social Media Oversight
Azfar Ali Nasir brings significant administrative experience to SMPRA, having previously served as a minister in Punjab’s caretaker government in 2023 under Mohsin Naqvi. During his tenure, he managed multiple departments including Auqaf, Religious Affairs, Zakat, Ushr, and Housing and Urban Development. Nasir was also actively engaged in overseeing various urban infrastructure and development initiatives.
Role and Importance of SMPRA Chairmanship
As chairman, Nasir will lead the regulatory body responsible for monitoring social media platforms across Pakistan. SMPRA has the authority to enforce compliance orders, address grievances, and take necessary action against platforms that breach the legal framework. The role gains prominence as Pakistan advances the implementation of its cybercrime amendments, aiming to ensure a regulated and responsible social media environment.
Relevance for Pakistani Digital Users
The appointment of Azfar Ali Nasir highlights the government’s commitment to strengthening digital governance amid growing concerns about online content and cyber threats in Pakistan. For Pakistani internet users, this regulatory oversight could mean more accountability for social media companies and potentially improved protections against misinformation and cybercrimes. It also underlines the evolving landscape of digital rights and responsibilities in the country.
Azfar Ali Nasir stated, “I look forward to contributing to a safer and more transparent social media ecosystem.”
