Apple Intelligence to Launch in China Using Alibaba AI Models

Apple is preparing to introduce its Apple Intelligence AI services in China through the upcoming iOS 27.3 update, expected to roll out in December. This marks a significant step as Apple’s AI offerings have faced prolonged delays in the Chinese market due to regulatory challenges.

Apple Intelligence’s China Debut With Alibaba Partnership

Initially launched alongside iOS 18 in 2024, Apple Intelligence has been unavailable in China and the European Union because of strict local rules governing AI technology. To navigate China’s regulatory environment, Apple plans to integrate Alibaba’s AI technologies, specifically the Qwen and Tongyi Wanxiang models, to power its services within the country.

While in Western countries, Apple leverages Google’s Gemini AI model, in China it will rely on Alibaba’s Qwen for general AI tasks and Tongyi Wanxiang for image and video generation features. However, due to local restrictions, several functionalities will see limited access; for example, the new AI-enhanced version of Siri will not be launched in China in this update, and certain text-generation applications will also be constrained.

Limited Features Reflect Ongoing Regulatory Hurdles

The Tongyi Wanxiang model will support image editing inside Apple Intelligence, but other features like the Image Playground will be blocked by government regulations. Consequently, the Chinese version of Apple Intelligence will not be as comprehensive as its counterpart in the United States.

Similar limitations affect Apple’s AI rollout in the European Union, where Siri AI is yet to be deployed on iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches. Apple has confirmed that only Mac and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU, speaking supported languages, will initially have access to Siri AI.

Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has cautioned that Siri AI is unlikely to become available in China or the EU in the near future, indicating that Apple’s broader AI expansion will continue to be shaped by regional regulatory conditions.

Why Apple Intelligence’s Entry into China Matters for Pakistani Users

For tech consumers in Pakistan and surrounding regions, the introduction of Apple Intelligence in China offers insight into how major international tech firms are adapting their AI strategies to meet the demands of different regulatory landscapes. Given Alibaba’s involvement, there may also be future cross-border AI collaborations that influence the availability and nature of AI-driven services in Pakistan. Understanding these developments helps local users anticipate shifts in AI-enabled applications for mobile devices widely used in the region.

As Apple advances cautiously in key worldwide markets, its move to partner with Alibaba signals a growing trend of global tech companies customizing AI solutions to align with domestic policies, which will likely shape how AI tools evolve and expand within Pakistan’s rapidly developing tech ecosystem.
