FBR Allows Correction of E-Invoices After 72 Hours

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has introduced a new feature enabling taxpayers to rectify or cancel electronic sales tax invoices beyond the existing 72-hour time limit. This update provides a formal process to address invoicing errors with prior approval from the Commissioner Inland Revenue (CIR).

New Amendment Process on IRIS Portal

This facility has been integrated into the IRIS system, as outlined by Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL). Taxpayers seeking to amend or cancel an e-invoice after the 72-hour deadline must submit a formal application through the IRIS portal. The CIR reviews every application carefully before granting approval.

To initiate the process, taxpayers log into IRIS, navigate to the Sales Tax applications, and select the option titled ‘Application for Amendment in Electronic Sales Tax Invoice (after 72 hrs)’. Through this interface, they can search invoices by their FBR Invoice Transaction Number and perform requested changes.

Importantly, taxpayers cannot amend and cancel the same invoice within a single application, and multiple applications for a tax period can be filed as long as invoices involved haven’t been previously approved or rejected.

Impact and Conditions for Taxpayers

While an application is pending, taxpayers are restricted from filing the Annexure-C (Sales) part of their sales tax return. The system automatically blocks submissions until the CIR issues a decision. Approved changes will then reflect in Annexure-C after passing system validations, while rejected requests will revert to the original invoice data.

Additional restrictions include barring applications for invoices already linked to Annexure-C or those previously handled successfully under prior requests. The CIR also holds the authority to demand further clarifications during the review period via IRIS’s internal correspondence functionality.

Why This Matters for Pakistan’s Business Community

This amendment presents a vital improvement in Pakistan’s digital tax infrastructure, offering more flexibility to taxpayers dealing with electronic invoicing challenges. Before this update, corrections past the 72-hour window were not feasible, which caused operational hurdles and compliance issues for businesses.

By enhancing accuracy and transparency in tax reporting through formal oversight, the FBR’s approach encourages compliance while minimizing potential penalties stemming from simple errors. This balance is especially beneficial for businesses striving to operate within Pakistan’s evolving regulatory framework and maintain efficient financial documentation.

As more enterprises adopt electronic invoicing to meet regulatory mandates, this facility supports smoother tax operations and fosters trust between taxpayers and tax authorities.

FBR spokesperson stated, “This new mechanism safeguards taxpayer interests by facilitating corrections with due regulatory scrutiny.”
