Nepra is likely to increase Rs 4.68 per unit power tariff

The consumers should be ready for another electric blow as the power regulator has indicated an increase of Rs 4.68 per unit in power tariff on account of fuel adjustment for the month of February 2022.

The imported fuel like coal and RLNG had contributed to a massive increase in the price of electricity.

The consumers may face a burden of Rs 40 billion.

The Nepra conducted a public hearing here to consider a hike in power tariff on account of fuel adjustment for the month of February 2022.

Central Power Purchasing Agency-Guaranteed (CPPA-G) had pleaded to allow an increase of Rs 4.94 per unit against reference fuel charges of Rs 4.25 per unit. The total fuel cost of generation remained at Rs 9.19 per unit.

Nepra had calculated Rs 4.68 per unit increase after examining the data.

Earlier, power companies had charged Rs 5.94 per unit on account of the fuel cost adjustment for the month of January 2022.

However, power distribution companies would charge Rs 1.26 per unit less tariff compared to the month of January fuel adjustment in April this year.

This will not apply on the consumers of K Electric.

However, the regulator will announce the final decision later.

Expensive fuels contribute to increase in power tariff

According to CPPA-G, the higher cost of imported fuels like coal, furnace oil, RLNG, and high-speed diesel contributed to an increase in the fuel cost adjustment for the month of February 2022.

The power distribution companies will charge an increase for all consumers including lifeline consumers having ToU meters.

According to the data submitted to NEPRA, in February 2022, hydel generation was 1,473.76 constituting 18.22 per cent of total generation.

Power generation from coal-fired power plants stood at 2,563.87 GWh in February 2022, accounting for 31.7% of total generation.

The price of coal generation stood at Rs 13.0944 per unit but there was no generation from HSD in February.

Generation from RFO made a massive increase to 526.73 GWh in February 2022 which accounted for 6.51 % of total generation. Its cost was Rs 21.4565 per unit.

Electricity generation from gas-based power plants remained 918.40 36 MW in Feb 2022 and its share was 11.36 % in total generation, costing Rs 8.1826 per unit.

The share of RLNG based generation was 1,226 GWh or 15.16% of total generation at cost of Rs 14.3 per unit that contributed to increase in power tariff.
