Punjab Govt May Announce Early Summer Vacations Due to Heatwave
The Punjab government is considering announcing early summer vacations for schools and colleges in response to rising temperatures and increasing heatwave concerns across the province.
Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat stated that the government is reviewing a proposal to commence summer holidays from May 22, with institutions expected to reopen on August 2. He mentioned that a final decision will be made on May 11 after consultations with relevant departments and a detailed review of the weather situation.
In addition to the adjusted vacation schedule, authorities are exploring the possibility of organizing summer camps during the break period to provide students with structured activities while schools remain closed.
This development follows a recent weather advisory issued by the Punjab Disaster Management Authority, which warned of above-normal temperatures and increased rainfall over May, June, and July. The advisory highlights that plain areas of Punjab are at higher risk of heatwave conditions in May due to elevated temperatures.
Last year, the Punjab government initially scheduled summer vacations from May 28 to August 14 but extended the holidays to August 31 owing to extreme weather conditions. The government’s proactive approach aims to safeguard students and staff from the adverse effects of the intense heat.
The potential early vacation announcement aligns with ongoing efforts to ensure public safety and minimize disruptions caused by extreme weather events. Educators and parents are awaiting the official confirmation ahead of the summer break.
