Sindh Lab Finds Six Syringe Brands Substandard in Karachi

KARACHI: The Sindh Drug Testing Laboratory has identified six syringe brands as substandard after testing samples collected from various markets in Karachi. This discovery has raised public health concerns regarding the potential spread of infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis across Sindh and other parts of Pakistan.

The laboratory conducted Auto-Disable (AD) testing on both 3ml and 5ml syringes produced by multiple manufacturers. These syringes are intended to have built-in safety mechanisms to prevent reuse, which is critical in controlling the transmission of blood-borne infections.

Adnan Rizvi, Director of the Sindh Drug Testing Laboratory, stated that the quality assessment revealed significant deficiencies in the auto-disable and reuse prevention features of the six syringe brands. These failures compromise the syringes’ safety, allowing the possibility of repeated use which can facilitate the spread of diseases.

Health experts warn that defective syringes without reliable reuse prevention mechanisms pose a serious health risk. The reuse of contaminated syringes can contribute to the transmission of infectious agents, including HIV and hepatitis viruses, thereby endangering public health.

Following the laboratory’s findings, the report has been forwarded to relevant authorities, including drug inspectors and the Secretary of the Quality Control Board in Karachi. These bodies are expected to undertake further investigation and implement regulatory measures to address the issue.

The discovery underscores the importance of stringent quality controls in medical supplies to ensure patient safety and prevent disease outbreaks. Authorities are urged to monitor the situation closely and enforce standards to eliminate the circulation of substandard medical devices in the healthcare system.
