Punjab Launches Lahore’s First E-Bike Rental Service
The provincial government of Punjab has launched its first e-bike rental service in Lahore, aiming to provide an eco-friendly and modern transportation alternative for commuters. This initiative is part of the government’s efforts to address urban air pollution and traffic congestion through sustainable solutions.
The project’s initial phase will involve the deployment of 10,000 electric bikes accompanied by 300 docking and charging stations situated at strategic locations across the city. The Punjab Housing Authority is facilitating the project by allocating land for these docking hubs, ensuring they are accessible from major residential and commercial areas as well as near public transport points.
Authorized users, including students, office workers, and general commuters, will have the convenience of booking and unlocking electric bikes via a dedicated mobile application. The service promises to offer an affordable commuting option that reduces reliance on conventional fuel-based vehicles.
Officials estimate that the initiative could cut thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions annually in Lahore, contributing significantly toward combating the city’s chronic air quality problems caused by pollution and seasonal smog. This program aligns with broader governmental aims to introduce technologically advanced, anti-smog solutions in Punjab’s urban centers.
The service rollout will be overseen by multiple government bodies, including the Transport Department, Safe City Authority, Li Park, and other relevant agencies, ensuring coordinated implementation and management of the new e-bike system.
The Housing Secretary highlighted the benefits of the scheme, noting it will help alleviate traffic congestion, reduce transportation costs for commuters, and protect the environment through the promotion of clean electric mobility.
