First Jhang Desert Rally Ends After Three-Day Competition

The inaugural Jhang Desert Rally concluded on October 18, 2026, after a thrilling three-day event held in the Thal Desert near Rehmatabad, Tehsil Athara Hazari. This pioneering motorsport event combined off-road racing with cultural showcases to highlight Jhang’s desert terrain and rich local traditions.

Highlights from the Jhang Desert Rally

Organized by the District Administration of Jhang, the rally was originally planned as a 95-kilometer course but was ultimately contested over a 78-kilometer track through challenging desert terrain. Sultan Khalid Hameed Khan from Team Sultan emerged victorious in the main desert category, finishing the route in 51 minutes and 25 seconds. Veteran racer Mir Nadir Magsi and Jeyand Hoth took second and third places respectively, followed by Sahibzada Sultan Muhammad Ali in fourth.

In the Prepared category, Mian Rafiq secured first place, with Arbaz Khan and Irfan Mian finishing second and third.

A Celebration Beyond Racing

Beyond the competition, the event featured a three-day cultural festival filled with traditional sports such as tent pegging, kabaddi, volleyball, and paragliding demonstrations. Food stalls and accommodations were arranged to welcome visitors, aiming to draw more attention to Jhang’s cultural heritage and tourism potential within the expansive Thal Desert.

Organizers anticipated participation from approximately 100 drivers and riders across Pakistan, including female jeep racers, reinforcing the event’s inclusive spirit.

Significance for Pakistan’s Motorsport and Local Tourism

The Jhang Desert Rally represents a strategic addition to Pakistan’s desert rally circuit, which has largely been dominated by events in Cholistan and other parts of the Thal region. Introducing Jhang into this lineup not only broadens Pakistan’s off-road competition landscape but also helps spotlight lesser-known cultural and geographical assets of the district.

District officials believe that with consistent organization, improved safety measures, and continued interest from top racers, future editions could turn this event into a permanent highlight on the national motorsport calendar.

Tragic Incident During the Festival

Unfortunately, the rally’s festive atmosphere was marred by a fatal accident involving renowned paraglider Qazi Zafar Khan. During a demonstration, his glider caught fire shortly after takeoff, leading to severe injuries. Despite saving a 14-year-old passenger onboard, Khan succumbed to critical burns. The young passenger received advanced medical care at Allied Hospital in Faisalabad. The district administration pledged financial support to the bereaved family.

This event’s mix of sporting competition and cultural celebration underlines a growing trend in Pakistan to promote regional identity and tourism through motorsport, offering locals and visitors a unique experience combined with heritage appreciation.
