KP to Receive Rs100 Billion for N-45 Highway Upgrade

The federal government of Pakistan has approved significant financial allocations for infrastructure enhancements in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), including a major upgrade of the National Highway N-45 between Chakdara and Timergara. The total investment across three key KP projects is valued at nearly Rs100 billion, reflecting a strong commitment to regional development.

Details of the N-45 Upgrade Project

The centerpiece of the infrastructure push is the planned expansion and improvement of a 39-kilometer stretch on National Highway N-45, linking Chakdara and Timergara. With a budget of approximately Rs17.012 billion, this road enhancement has been submitted to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) for final approval. Funding for this initiative is expected to come largely from foreign investment, specifically from the Export-Import Bank (Exim Bank).

This highway segment is crucial as it serves as a vital northern transport corridor facilitating connectivity between Chakdara, Timergara, Dir, and Chitral. By upgrading this road, the government aims to boost traffic safety and enhance accessibility to prominent tourist destinations such as Kalash, Shandur, and Kumrat, thereby supporting economic activity and regional tourism development.

Additional Infrastructure and Development Projects in KP

Beyond the highway project, KP will also benefit from a range of large-scale initiatives approved by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) chaired by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal. The largest among these is the KP Resilient Irrigated Agriculture Livelihoods Development Project, with a budget of nearly Rs69.893 billion. The Asian Development Bank will finance most of this project, contributing Rs56.133 billion, while the provincial government will allocate Rs11.692 billion. This project focuses on rehabilitating crucial irrigation infrastructure like the Pehur Main Canal and expanding the irrigation network to boost agricultural productivity in the region.

In addition, the CDWP cleared a Rs13.323 billion project aimed at providing off-grid solar energy solutions to households in the newly merged districts, highlighting efforts to improve energy access in underdeveloped areas. This solar scheme is also pending approval from Ecnec.

Why These Developments Matter for Pakistan

These infrastructure investments signify a strategic emphasis on improving transportation links and essential services in KP, a province known for its challenging terrain and economic potential. Improvements in road connectivity not only facilitate safer and more efficient travel but also enhance commercial activities and tourism, delivering socio-economic benefits to local communities. Similarly, upgrading irrigation and expanding renewable energy facilities address critical needs in agriculture and energy security, underpinning sustainable development goals.

For Pakistani citizens, especially those in KP, these projects represent prospects for improved quality of life, job creation, and stronger integration of remote areas into the national economy. As the government pursues these large-scale initiatives, close monitoring and timely execution will be pivotal to realizing their full potential and delivering tangible benefits on the ground.

Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal chaired the CDWP meeting where these project approvals were finalized, demonstrating the federal administration’s prioritization of development in KP within the broader national context.
