Nepra Imposes Rs975M Fine on Power Firms
Nepra has imposed a fine of Rs975 million over the past few years for fatal and non-fatal accidents at power-distribution licensees shows Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) topping the list with Rs310 million fines to date, followed by Hyderabad Electric Supply company HESCO) with Rs117 million.
The privatized K-Electric faced a total fine of Rs95.5 million across multiple years including 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2024-25). Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) with Rs86 million, Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) Rs85 million, Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) Rs61 million, Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) Rs54 million, Sukkar Electric Power Company (SEPCO) Rs53 million, Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) Rs51 million, and Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) RsRs42.5 million.
National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) was also fine for Rs10 million.
Of the total Rs975 million fines, the share of fatal fines was Rs635 million and non-fatal was Rs330 million.
The regulator also notes substantial non-fatal fines ranging into the hundreds of millions, underscoring ongoing safety-and-compliance concerns across the grid.
Under fatal-accident fines IESCO faced highest Rs100 million fine, followed by K-Electric with 95.5 million, HESCO Rs87 million, LESCO 76 million, MEPCO Rs51 million, GEPCO Rs44 million, SEPCO Rs43 million, FESCO 41 million and Qesco with Rs22.5 million.
Among the non-fatal accident total fine of Rs330 million, again IESCO was at the top with 210 million, followed by HESCO Rs30 million, QESCO Rs20 million, and PESCO, LESCO, GEPCO, SEPCO, FESCO, MEPCO with Rs10 million each. Interestingly, K-Electric faced no fined under this head.
NTDC was fined for Rs 10 million in 2024-25 for a fatal accident case involving two individuals.
