UK Nationals to Isolate After Hantavirus Cruise Outbreak
UK passengers and crew from the MV Hondius cruise ship, affected by a hantavirus outbreak, will undergo isolation in a hospital upon their return to the United Kingdom, health authorities announced on Saturday.
The MV Hondius is scheduled to dock near Tenerife, Spain, on Sunday morning, where the 22 UK nationals onboard will be repatriated by air to Britain. Several other European countries including Germany, France, Belgium, and Ireland are also evacuating their nationals after the outbreak onboard resulted in eight infections and three fatalities.
Upon arriving in northwest England, the returning passengers and crew will be placed under observation and tested for hantavirus during a precautionary isolation period lasting up to 72 hours. The facility designated for this initial isolation is Arrowe Park Hospital near Liverpool, according to a statement jointly released by regional health departments, police, and local authorities.
While the UK Health Security Agency has instructed all individuals returning from the cruise to isolate for 45 days at home, officials emphasized that the risk to the broader UK population remains very low at this time.
Hantavirus is a rare but serious virus transmitted by rodents, with symptoms that can progress rapidly and require medical attention. The outbreak onboard the cruise ship has heightened vigilance among international health authorities, prompting swift measures to contain any further spread.
The coordinated international response highlights ongoing efforts to manage emerging infectious diseases through rapid evacuation, medical assessment, and preventive isolation. UK authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to safeguard public health.
