Govt appoints Aslam R. Khan as Chairman Board PIA

Islamabad: The government has appointed Govt appoints Aslam R. Khan as Chairman Board of directors Pakistan International Airlines Corporation Limited (PIACL).
The Aviation Division briefed the Cabinet government had approved the composition of the existing Board of Directors of Pakistan International Airlines Corporation Limited (PIACL) under section 165 of Companies Act, 2017 in its meeting held on 13-10-2020.
Subsequently, the Aviation Division, in accordance with Rule 4(4) of the Public Sector Companies (Corporate Governance) Rules 2013, initiated a summary for the Federal Cabinet containing a panel of Non-Executive Members of PIACL Board of Directors for appointment of Chairman of the Board on March 19, 2021.
The Federal Cabinet considered the said summary in its meeting held on April 1, 2021, and subsequently, directed Aviation Division as follows:
＂The sponsoring Division to follow the procedure enunciated in Section 192 of Companies Act, 2017 and re-submit the case within two weeks”.

According to Section 192 (1) of the Companies Act, 2017, furthermore, the Board of a listed company shall appoint a Chairman from amongst the non -executive directors, who shall hold office for a period of three years.
Accordingly, in pursuance of the aforesaid decision of the Cabinet and in accordance with Section 192(1) of the Companies Act,2017, the PIACL Board of Directors, in its meeting held on April 29, 2021, had unanimously elected Mr.Aslam R. Khan as Chairman of the Board.
The Aviation Division supported the recommendations of the Board of Directors of PIACL for the appointment of Mr. Aslam R. Khan as Chairman of the Board amongst the non-executive members for confirmation/approval of the Federal Cabinet.
During the discussion, moreover, the Prime Minister enquired about the bifurcation of powers and functions of CAA. Aviation Division informed that the legislation in that respect was ready.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet considered the summary titled ‘Appointment of Chairman PIACL Board’ Aviation Division had submitted and approved the proposal.
