HEC Makes AI Course Mandatory for Pakistani University Students

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has approved a new policy mandating the inclusion of a 3-credit-hour course titled Introduction to Artificial Intelligence for students enrolled in relevant degree programs at public universities nationwide.
This decision, reached during a consultative meeting of vice-chancellors, aims to equip students with foundational knowledge in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and data-driven technologies. It reflects the growing significance of AI in the global economy and seeks to ensure that Pakistani graduates develop future-ready digital skills to meet the demands of an increasingly technology-oriented job market.
Universities have been directed to integrate the AI course into their curricula immediately, with the rollout planned in phases across various academic disciplines. To facilitate this implementation, the Information Technology University has developed three proposed course modules which have already been approved in the 45th meeting of the HEC. These modules have been shared with public-sector universities for adoption.
In addition to the national directive, a formal notification has been issued specifically to public universities in Punjab to expedite the incorporation of AI education into their academic offerings. Education officials emphasized that the overarching goal is to modernize higher education standards, strengthen digital literacy, and bolster Pakistan’s competitiveness in the global technology landscape.
The introduction of a standardized AI course is also expected to stimulate greater student interest in emerging technologies and contribute to developing a skilled workforce capable of driving Pakistan’s digital transformation and innovation ecosystem forward.
HEC officials view this initiative as part of a broader strategic effort to align higher education with evolving technological trends and labor market needs. By embedding AI education into university programs, Pakistan aims to prepare its youth for future challenges and opportunities in the age of rapid technological advancement.
